Ingredients for Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken
This meal is a pantry staple wonder. Most of these ingredients have a permanent spot on my pantry shelf or are sitting in my freezer as we speak. I like to grab a few of each ingredient so I can make this when I don’t have anything fresh in my fridge. We all just need a go-to easy meal that uses shelf-stable ingredients.
- yellow onion
- chicken breasts
- jasmine or white rice
- onion soup mix (just a packet of onion soup that you find in the soup aisle, Lipton or a generic brand is fine)
- beef broth
- canned French onion soup (yes, this is a thing! go to the canned soup aisle and you’ll find it)
- provolone cheese
- crispy fried onions (you can usually find these with the other salad toppers like croutons)
How to Make Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken
Grease a slow cooker with nonstick spray or use a slow cooker liner if you want easy cleanup.
Add the chicken, onion, rice, onion soup mix, beef broth, and can of French onion soup to the bottom of the slow cooker.
Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 5 hours or HIGH for 3 hours, or until the rice is tender and the chicken is cooked through.
For many of my slow cooker recipes, the longer they cook the better they end up. This is one that you want to set a timer for. Don’t overcook or the rice will be mushy. You might want to check every hour just to make sure everything is cooking properly.
Once cooked, place the slices of provolone cheese on top of the chicken, and sprinkle the fried onions on top. Cover with the lid and cook for an additional 10 minutes to melt the cheese. You can serve this with a salad or side of steamed vegetables.
