One-pot meals are my absolute favorite to make, for a few reasons: 1) less cleanup, 2) I only have to wash one pan, 3) I don’t spend as long washing dishes. Ha! But for real, one of my favorite things about one-pot meals is the minimal clean-up, but there is also an unintended consequence of only using one pan: flavor! Hear me out: you have to cook everything in the same pan, so it all gets cooked together and the flavors meld together well.
In this recipe in particular, the sausage is cooked first, so everything else is infused with those savory flavors. This One-Pot Chicken Sausage Orzo Skillet with Broccoli is just a win overall!
Ingredients for Chicken Sausage Orzo Skillet
You can totally customize this recipe to make it your own. Use a different vegetable or your favorite type of cheese to make it something that your family will love! And if you have any dairy-free family members, you can totally leave out the cheese and it will still be delicious.
- chicken sausage (I used Aidell’s Chicken and Apple Sausage)
- fresh broccoli florets
- minced garlic
- olive oil
- uncooked orzo
- chicken broth
- grated Parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese
How to Make Chicken Sausage Orzo Skillet
This is the perfect one pot meal because it’s quick, easy, and actually benefits from being cooked in the same pot! Cooking the sausage first allows the orzo to soak up all of the browned flavorful bits in the bottom of the pan. And that’s just *chef’s kiss*.
Slice the chicken sausage into half moons and brown them in a non-stick sauté pan over medium heat for about 2 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and broccoli and let that all cook together for a few minutes.
Add the orzo and broth and stir well, scraping the flavorful bits off the bottom of the pan. This is where the flavor is!
Turn the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the orzo is tender. Stir in the cheese, let it melt, then serve and enjoy!
